Why do we look tired or sad (and are subjected to remarks about it) when we are in good health? Below, in order of decreasing importance, are the facial features which make a face appear sad or tired and how we can treat them with safe, simple methods.

DARK CIRCLES

Dark coloured rings (difficult to treat and certainly not by injectable products, rather by cosmetics or lasers) and hollows (much improved by hyaluronic acid injections since they are long lasting in this area).

To treat the circles, you need to consult a practitioner who is used to injecting this area as it is very delicate and few doctors have been trained in this technique.

THE TEAR TROUGH

This is the hollow starting at the rings under the eyes and diagonally crossing the apples of the cheeks. It is caused by disappearing fatty tissue and by the malar membrane on the deep inner surface of the dermis, creating a small depression. We can easily treat it with hyaluronic acid or Radiesse injections, which can be given deeply under the muscle, or superficially just under or in the skin.

THE NASO-LABIAL FOLDS

Starting at the nose, they run down to the corners of the mouth, giving the face an older, sad appearance; they can be treated in a few minutes by hyaluronic acid or Radiesse injections.

MARIONETTE FOLDS

These start at the corners of the mouth and run downwards, often forming a fold.

These are also effectively improved by hyaluronic acid or Radiesse injections.

The folds have the effect of ageing the whole of the face.

HOLLOW CHEEKS

A hollow face appears sadder and more tired than a full face (avoiding the extreme of an over-injected face), caused by the shadows – the full face of a child reflects light very well.

We can plump up the hollows and so reduce the shadows, but without making the face appear inflated; rather to give the face a fresher, more rested, younger appearance.

Of course, we also take into account the skin quality. A lacklustre skin, without radiance can be improved by light peeling with fruit acids or by mesotherapy, which will add vitamins, minerals and hyaluronic acid.
